This museum is housed in the beautiful and unusual home of the innovative engineer Aristide Bergès (1833-1904). The presentation focuses on this figure, his technical challenges, hydroelectricity and the development of his paper mill.
To this technical and industrial side is added a more intimate approach to the family's life and artistic world, with works by Alfons Mucha, great master of Art Nouveau, who stayed in Lancey on several occasions.
The Lancey site is an exceptional place of remembrance, recalling the birth of hydroelectricity and paying tribute to the people who took part in this adventure, the very source of local, regional and national economic development.
The collections held by the Maison Bergès (formerly known as the Musée de la Houille blanche) consist of archives covering both the life of the Bergès family and the company founded by Aristide and taken over by his sons.
They also include a large photographic collection showing the development of the factory, the members of the family and the works of art once spread throughout the house. Added to this is a collection of furniture, prints, literary works and paintings, mostly by Maurice, Aristide's youngest child, but also by some painter friends such as Gaston Bussière or Alfons Mucha...
The collections also include industrial equipment, such as the turbines displayed in the park, and laboratory objects: refining beaters for paper-making, for example, a Barlow wheel for electricity... Some of these objects come from the former Bergès paper mill, while others are donations or acquisitions that have added to the existing collection.
