The basin and wash houseThe bench of Pius VII
On this heritage trail you will discover the village's places of memory and picturesque sites in 11 stages.
Stage 1: A landscape that has changed
In the past, between the hillsides and the plain, vine growing flourished.
The development of the alluvial plain began in 1818 with the first embankments.

Stage 2: The wash-house basin
In 1883, a sum was bequeathed to the municipality by Madame Solary, "To build a small roof on one side of the large fountain to shelter the women doing the washing".

Stage 3: The Town Hall and the liberty tree
The construction of the Town Hall building was completed in 1879.
As early as 1972, the first liberty tree was planted in Lumbin; it was felled in 1960 because it threatened the safety of the site.

Stage 4: The coaching inn - Henri Fabre
In the municipality, the former Chalmette house, now demolished, served as a coaching inn as well as a hotel.
Henri Fabre came from a family of sailors. He divided his life between Marseille, where he was born, and Lumbin.
In 1906 he devoted himself to building a seaplane. After several attempts, his first seaplane, the "Canard", took off from the étang de Berre on 28 March 1910.

Stage 5: The silkworm farm on rue Grand-Dufay
During the 18th century, sericulture appeared in several municipalities of the Grésivaudan. A witness to this bygone era, an old silkworm farm can still be seen on the right as you go down rue Grand-Dufay, at the second farm porch.

Stage 6: Lumbin church
The existence of the first church of the parish of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine is mentioned in the Crolles archives in the 15th century.
A new, more spacious church was opened for worship in 1842. It was destroyed by fire on the night of 4 August 2009. The bell tower was rebuilt in 2011.

Stage 7: Pius VII's bench - Lumbin port
Napoleon had Pius VII arrested in July 1809.
The Pope crossed Italy, went over the Mont-Cenis and stopped in Lumbin on 20 July 1809 to spend the night there.
During a walk along the allée des Tilleuls, the Sovereign Pontiff is said to have sat on this stone bench.
As the 1787 map seems to indicate, the path leading to the port was an extension of the allée des Tilleuls.

Stage 8: The tramway
Work on an electric tramway began in 1898.
A first section opened between Grenoble and Crolles in 1899.
In 1900, the line was extended to Chapareillan.
The tramway allowed the people of Lumbin to sell their goods at the Grenoble markets and to do their shopping there.

Stage 9: The cliff rockfalls
Lumbin has been the scene of numerous rockfalls from the cliff.
Rockfalls were reported in 1701 and during the winter of 1708-1709.
On the evening of 20 August 1948, blocks reached the area near the road.
On 02 January 2002, at 23:30, a 10 m3 block came to rest against a house on chemin des Grangettes.
Undertaken by the municipality, the construction of the protective embankment has sheltered the whole village from the risks posed by the cliff.

Stage 10: Le Petit Lumbin
The hamlet of Le Petit Lumbin is mentioned as early as the 14th century and in the 15th century had a fortified house, now downgraded to a manor house, which then belonged to the nobleman A. de Berlion (this should be read as the Berlioz family). The Berlion family was a family from the Valentinois.

Stage 11: The Carre stream, its mills and its edge-tool works
In its day, Lumbin had three mills.
Le Petit Lumbin had two of them on the Carre stream.
The third was located on the Montfort stream.
These mills were equipped to grind cereals and to produce hemp oil for lighting.
Lumbin's old edge-tool works stands beside the departmental road, near the bridge over the Carre stream.
It stopped operating around 1930. Afterwards, the workshop was equipped with electrically powered woodworking machines.

Good walking shoes are recommended.
All year round.

Subject to favourable weather conditions.
