Along this heritage trail, you will discover, in 8 stages, the places of memory and picturesque sites of the village.
Stage 1: Former TramwayThis was once Chapareillan station. Not a train but a Tramway that left Chapareillan to reach Grenoble along the Right bank. The Grenoble to Chapareillan tramway (abbreviated TGC) was a French suburban electric tramway that ran from Chapareillan between 1900 and 1933, serving the right bank of the Grésivaudan valley, up to the border of Savoie.
Stage 2: The old wine press The vineyard covers 115 ha. It is mainly located on the hillsides.
Stage 3: Chemin des Justes This path was named to perpetuate the memory and the values of the « Righteous Among the Nations ». The women and men who, with courage and at the risk of their lives, saved Jews during the Second World War by opposing the Nazi antisemitic persecutions and the French Vichy State.
Stage 4: The Town Hall.According to the date engraved on the chimney, Chapareillan town hall would have turned 100 in 2012. In fact it was completed in spring 1913 and inaugurated on 31 August of the same year. A tragedy marred the building work on 30 July 1912: that day, Clément Castamagne, a young 16-year-old carpenter, fell to his death during the construction of the roof. Also to be seen on the square: a fountain and public weighbridge.
Stage 5: The 100-day factory (now Ateliers du Granier)
In November 1915, the Bouchayer et Viallet company came to Chapareillan to build a shell factory. Auguste Bouchayet developed a new process for hollowing out shells: forging with a hydraulic press. To power the presses of the new factory, they were connected to the penstock of the Cernon hydroelectric power station.
Stage 6: "White Coal", the Cernon plant (in the municipality of Barraux)
The Cernon plant was created in 1893. At that time, the search for a new hydraulic power that could be quickly exploited to light towns and villages made every stream coveted.
Stage 7: Bellecombe church and castle (+ viewpoint and orientation table)
Castle
By decree of 10/09/1947, the ensemble formed by the castle ruins and the church of Bellecombe was listed in the inventory of picturesque sites of Isère
Church
In the Middle Ages there was only a small chapel, roughly half the size of the present one. At the end of the 13th century it was burnt down by the armies of Count Amadeus V of Savoy.
Stage 8: Themed hike: Charcoal kilns - Lac Noir
in the municipality of Les Marches, part of the communal forest of Chapareillan)
In 2003, the Chapareillan heritage committee was informed by one of its members of the existence, near Lac Noir, of metal vats formerly used for making charcoal.
